Richard Clews is not your typical rally driver. His ‘day job’ sees him consult, advise and manage several leading automotive brands, whereas he fills his ‘downtime’ behind the wheel of his professionally prepared Subaru Impreza STi as he competes for honours in the National Asphalt Rally Championship.
Having started out in a Mini Cooper in 2001, Richard graduated to a Peugeot 106 GTi - in which he won the National Tarmac Championship front-wheel-drive title in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007. He then swapped to a Group N Fiesta ST before going on to secure class victories in 2009 and 2010.
In 2011 Richard joined forces with Geoff Jones Motorsport (GJM) rally team and drove an ex-works Subaru Impreza in which he went on to win the highly competitive N4 category and claim a credible top ten overall position in the National Asphalt Championship.
In 2014, Richard commissioned the building of a new, lightweight, full specification Subaru in which he went on to win another four class titles, an achievement that now makes him a 10-times National Champion. Evolved over several seasons of tough competition, with the recent help from GT and Chevron Motorsport the car still has what it takes to obtain class honours, often punching above its weight in terms of overall results against World Rally Cars and other far more sophisticated machinery such as the latest breed of R5.
Making good use of all his years of experience, Richard will contest the 2020 National Tarmac Championship, with one goal in his sights, to be the fastest driver in his category.
Rallying offers an exceptional marketing platform. In an Instagram age, the sight of a rally car flat-out, sliding and jumping through a stage can generate all kinds of social shares and associations. Add your corporate branding into the mix and the benefits are clear to see.
